Marta Kauffman and David Crane, the creators of Friends, believe they have identified the person responsible.
The creators of Friends recently shared that an ‘inside job' could have ruined the storyline for the final episode, even though it has been 20 years since it was revealed to the world.
On May 6, 2004, Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Phoebe, and Joey left Monica's apartment in New York City, each heading in their own direction.
The final episode concluded a decade of humor, love stories, and conflicts, bringing closure not just for the actors, but also for the countless supporters who had followed their journey from the beginning.
The show included a unique ask from the late Matthew Perry, as Paul Rudd recalls feeling out of place when filming ended.
The finale of Friends was a significant moment. However, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, the show creators, had their plans to keep it a secret ruined when certain parts of the script were leaked.
Crane told Today that he was very anxious because the writers were determined to do a good job.
Kauffman exclaimed, “Oh my goodness, we made such an effort to conceal it. We were desperate to keep it hidden, but unfortunately, it leaked. And it was an inside job.”

The creators clarified that only a limited number of scripts were distributed before the finale was unveiled, allowing them to track who had access to the confidential details.
Crane described the situation as resembling a detective show behind the scenes while they tried to determine the person accountable.
The leaked part of the script revealed a significant moment in the series – the moment when Rachel and Ross finally reconcile and get back together.
The ending of the story finally answered a big question, and Crane described it as ‘disappointing'.

Fortunately, the ending was full of unexpected twists, so the creators had to keep moving forward.
Crane asked, “What will you do by the end of the day?”
Regarding the mystery of who revealed the script, Kauffman responded with a simple “Ish” when questioned about solving it.
The creators kept the ending a secret, but luckily the finale is still considered iconic even today.
With 20 years now having passed since the finale, I'd say it's about time for a rewatch!
