It's spooky season—a time for fun, scares, and a bit of darkness. During this time of year, we expect to see creepy decorations everywhere. It's not yet time for the cheerful holiday season.
Just because Halloween is coming up doesn't mean we can't spread some kindness. A Halloween enthusiast shared a heartwarming message in a TikTok video that has become super popular.
Salena Webb, a mother of four from South Carolina, has a passion for Halloween. She loves to adorn her yard with eerie decorations. This year, she went above and beyond, transforming her front yard into a graveyard scene complete with ghosts, spiderwebs, pumpkins, a witch, tombstones, and skeletons holding a casket. It took her considerable time to set up this elaborate display. However, when her neighbor requested that she remove it, she complied.
Her neighbor asked her to remove some decorations to make things easier for his elderly father.
Salena shared a TikTok video recounting a moment when her neighbor approached her with a heartfelt request. In the clip, the neighbor explained, “Hey, I know you're preparing for Halloween. My dad just learned he has lung cancer, and he thinks your decorations are a bit too frightening.” He gestured toward the graveyard display and asked, “Could you please remove the casket?”
Immediately, Salena empathized with him. Since her neighbor's dad often spends time in his garage, which overlooks her yard, she recognized the significance of taking the casket away. “I didn't want to remind him of the potential outcomes if his dad doesn't improve,” she shared with Insider. “I didn't want to add more stress to their situation.”
Consequently, Salena removed the casket and gave the skeletons badminton rackets instead. She relocated the scarier decorations to her backyard. “Initially, I felt a bit down,” Salena noted in her TikTok caption, “But then I realized that removing the casket wouldn't affect me negatively, but it could help my neighbor feel a little better during this challenging time. Kindness is free, and showing compassion truly matters.”
Many people applauded Salena for her thoughtfulness. She shared the video and asked her followers what they would have done in her place. While some said they wouldn't have changed their decorations, a lot of people praised Salena for her caring attitude.
“Now this is what being a good neighbor is all about. Kindness doesn't cost anything. Thank you!” one user commented.
A different individual commented, “This was handled with such grace. The world could use more individuals like you! God bless you!”
Salena's neighbor expressed gratitude for her kindness. After she removed the casket, she gave him a card and some balloons. Despite the language barrier, she sensed his appreciation. He said to her, “You're good people.”
