The newest game in the Rockstar Games series “Grand Theft Auto VI” is set to release 12 years after the last one.
Fans can now mark their calendars as the highly anticipated sixth installment of the Grand Theft Auto franchise has finally been given a release date. Rockstar Games revealed on Thursday (16 May) that Grand Theft Auto VI is set to release in the fall of 2025.
Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, disclosed the news following a financial loss of $2.9bn in the previous financial quarter.
The business announced that GTA V has sold 200 million copies since it came out in 2013, making it the second highest-selling game ever after Minecraft, which has sold over 300 million copies.
Rockstar had to unveil the GTA VI trailer earlier than planned on December 5th due to it being leaked online. The video, which takes place in a fictionalized Miami called Vice City and features the song “Love is a Long Road” by Tom Petty, received over 93 million views on YouTube within the first day, breaking viewing records.
Fans were extremely positive in their reactions to the trailer, praising the game's graphics and the choice to have a female protagonist, which is a first for the franchise.
The Grand Theft Auto series is widely praised and loved by gamers. Many of the recent games in the franchise are considered to be some of the greatest video games of all time.
In September 2022, a hacker exposed 90 videos and screenshots of GTA 6. The leaked content showcased early development stages, strongly suggesting that the game would be set in Vice City.
GTA VI will have a new story but will take place in a bigger version of the setting from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in 2002.
Reddit users have already created maps of Vice City, inspired by the leaked information.
Similar to GTA V, the newest game will have multiple main characters. The trailer mainly focused on Lucia, a Latin American woman, and Jason, a man.
According to an insider, the upcoming game is said to be inspired by the notorious real-life outlaws Bonnie and Clyde.
Gregory Connors, an actor from New York, is said to have been chosen to portray Jason in GTA VI. While the casting hasn't been officially verified, Connors mentioned his involvement in a prominent role for a Rockstar game in 2025 on his updated CV.
Grand Theft Auto VI is set to release on the PS5 and the Xbox Series X in the fall of 2025.
